It consistently shows up as the value pick in roundups, the go-to recommendation on Reddit, and one of the highest-rated purifiers on Amazon. At around $180, it promises True HEPA filtration, PlasmaWave technology, a washable carbon filter, and enough airflow to handle a mid-size room.

We dug into the specifications, compared it against its closest competitors, and evaluated what you actually get for the money. Here is what we found.

The Basics: What You Get for $180

The Winix 5500-2 is a mid-range air purifier with a 4-stage filtration system. Air passes through a washable pre-filter, a True HEPA filter, a washable AOC (Advanced Odor Control) carbon filter, and Winix's proprietary PlasmaWave ionizer.

It covers rooms up to 360 sq ft, which puts it squarely in the medium-room category. That is enough for most living rooms, master bedrooms, and home offices. It includes auto mode with a built-in air quality sensor, a sleep mode, and a remote control.

At 15 x 8.2 x 23.6 inches and 15 pounds, it is a rectangular tower design. Not the most compact purifier on the market, but not unreasonably large for its output. It sits well in a corner or along a wall.

Build Quality and Design

The 5500-2 uses a rectangular tower design in matte dark gray. It is functional rather than stylish. The plastic housing feels solid but not premium. The front panel has a subtle pattern with the air quality LED, and the control buttons sit on top.

Controls include power, fan speed (low, medium, high, turbo), auto mode, sleep mode, PlasmaWave toggle, and timer (1, 4, 8 hours). There is also a remote control included, which is a nice convenience for adjusting settings from across the room.

The 5500-2 remains widely available through Amazon, Home Depot, and other retailers at the time of writing. More importantly, Winix has confirmed they will continue manufacturing replacement filters (Filter H) through at least 2032. That gives you a minimum of six years of filter availability.

If you are buying new today, consider the 5510 if you want WiFi features. But if you can find the 5500-2 at a discount, it is still an excellent purchase with a long runway of filter support.
